Black DogsDiscussion rating 4/5****It is an interesting novel narrated by a couple's son-in-law who attempts to uncover the reasons for their divided relationship. He traces the couple's early married life just after WWII in Europe. Both partners, June and Bernard start their marriage with similar beliefs however, shortly after their marriage, events start to change their relationship. This novel delves into the roles of men and women, their views of reality, the nature of marriage, spirituality vs. a practical view of the world and the nature of evil. We found these were issues that were easy to discuss. We also discussed McEwan's writing style and how we felt about the ending. |
