From May 5 to 14, 2005, Tapestry New Opera Works - an innovative new opera company – will reprise its award-winning production of Nigredo Hotel, written by Canadian literary superstar, Ann-Marie MacDonald.

Book clubs are invited to participate in an exciting competition. The "INside Opera: Page to Stage Contest" is designed to introduce the art of the libretto (opera book and lyrics) to a literary audience.

Book clubs may submit one response to the following challenge:

Compose a brief sketch or outline (200-300 words) for an original, short opera for two characters.

Submissions will be accepted until Friday April 22, 2005 at 5:00pm, and will be reviewed by a panel of writers, directors and critics.

Submit your answer by email to information@tapestrynewopera.com, with “Libretto Contest” in the subject line, or mail/fax your entry to the address or number below. Please include written consent that the submission becomes the property of Tapestry New Opera Works once it is sent.

The winning book club and libretto will be announced on Tuesday May 10, 2005, during a post-show panel discussion called "Between the Sheets: an intimate look at the libretto of Nigredo Hotel", moderated by CBC Radio’s foremost lady of letters, Eleanor Wachtel. The winning libretto outline will be presented by Tapestry in the fall of 2005 as one of a programme of short works called Opera Briefs. Tapestry has also invited Her Excellency, Governor General Adrienne Clarkson, to attend the performance and participate in the discussion. This event is co-sponsored by the Toronto Womens’ Bookstore.

Whether or not you decide to participate, Tapestry will offer tickets to book clubs at a special group rate for all performances of Nigredo Hotel (except for the gala opening night on May 7). If you have never attended a Tapestry production or event, you are in for a treat! For more information, please call Tapestry at the number below. We hope to hear from you soon, and to meet you on May 10 at 8:00pm for a great evening.
