Here are three book suggestions for you.

If you haven't read "Sweetness in the Belly" by Camilla Gibb, you should. It's a remarkable book--the story of a white girl growing up as a Muslim in Ethiopia. A real journey, with multiple settings and well-developed characters--hard to put this one down.

"The Places in Between" by Rory Steward. It's a true story of a white British government worker who walks across Afghanistan just weeks after the Taliban has been ousted. Fascinating reading, provides a real insight and perspective into Afghanistan and the Muslim culture.

My final recommend is "The Glass Castle" by Jeanette Walls. This story is also true and equally fascinating. It's about a mother and father who choose to live in poverty, and sometimes even homeless. The parents are gifted and eccentric, the children all equally bright. It's a wild and, at times, unbelievable story that will have you laughing one minute and shaking your head in disbelief the next.

Another great source for good book recommendations is www.Juicespot.ca. It's a website where avid readers share and compare comments on the books they've read.

Hello Paula,
Try my novel, Stealing Nasreen. Have a look at the "reviews" section of this website to find out more! Serious, but funny. Definitely not dreary.

Hello Paula

I read your post concerning book ideas and I have a suggestion that would hopefully meet your criteria.

I've written a novel titled Vinland: The Beginning (it's set in L'Anse aux Meadows at the end of the first millenium). You can read about it on my web site, as well as read a review and also view some newspaper articles.

I give discounts to book clubs (5+ copies) and my postal rate is only $3.00/copy anywhere in Canada.

Thank you
R,G, Johnston

Literature for Life, a Toronto charity that runs a literacy promgram for at-risk teen-age girls is looking for book clubs willing to donate some of their gently used 'reads' for the first ever Book Club Book Sale at Toronto City Hall on Saturday, September 8th, World Literacy Day.
Books are needed now before many book clubs adjourn for the summer. They will be catalogued and carefully stored by volunteers until the date of the sale. Please contact:

Hello:

If you check our bookclub called A Novel Approach, you will see quite a listing of books read and rated. It is that time again that our members choose new books for the 2007/2008 year and I am looking for some suggestions:

I wish to move away from depressive and/or suicidal type of books and go to a really good story that is not dark and sad and deary.

Anyone have suggestions, and perhaps tell me a wee bit about it, so I have an idea of topic. Thanks
