Started in 2003, the Borealis Readers are an interesting and eclectic group of men and women who love to read and love to share our thoughts. Our philosophy is that a book club is the perfect venue at which to expand our minds and occasionally step outside our established reading boundaries. Our members take turns choosing the books. This way, each of us reads books we may not have chosen for ourselves otherwise. Often, we are very pleasantly surprised.
Borealis Readers book club in Saskatoon has been a way of getting to know people in our community and of opening minds to new-to-me books and ideas. Our book club fills a niche left open by many others which limit themselves to only one or two genres. We read all sorts of books from classical fiction (Sir Walter Scott's Rob Roy) to Canadian non-fiction (Trevor Harriot's River in a Dry Land) to sci-fi and speculative fiction (Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency). Some of our recent reads, (2006) have included Barbara Kingsolver's Poisonwood Bible, Erik Larson's Devil in the White City, Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner's Freakonomics, and Daniel Quinn's Ishmael.
We do limit our membership to 12 people as we meet at member's homes. This way the host is not overtaxed. Members are not required to host but rather volunteer as is convenient. We do reach full capacity sometimes but do email us if you are interested in joining our group. Openings are occasionally available.
We meet once a month and have a great time chatting about books.
Come out and read,
