Under the Covers Book Club

Our bookclub began in Regina in 1999 as a Chapter's idea with a staff member basically as host and to suggest reading material. Women have made up most of the membership and our numbers fluctuated to over 10 and have settled at the current 4, so it would be nice to have a couple more join up. As Chapter's interest in us waned and so did their service (they got rid of the seating areas), we relocated and renamed ourselves. We now regularly meet at the Atlantis coffee shop on the last Wednesday of the month, with exceptions for holidays and for the month we pick new books.

We've read quite a mixed bag of selections as everyone gets input into to what we pick and we also have had individual picks. We'll make up a big pile and then wean it down by consensus. We started reading one fiction and non-fiction per month but that was expensive and not always possible to finish so we now do one per month, primarily fiction. It's hard to believe we've gone through 72. We have read biographical choices like Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt, non-fiction like Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by Jon Berendt and A Year in Provence by Peter Mayle, humour like Inconcievable by Ben Elton and How to be Good by Nick Hornby, fiction like Scarlet Feather by Maeve Binchy and The Fourth Hand by John Irving. We like Canadian authors like Timothy Findley and Margaret Atwood, but after a couple of attempts typically stay away from Oprah picks. We usually try to track down discussion questions somewhere on the internet or fall back to a general list, but our discussions are informal with no one person chosen host for the meeting.
